The OnePlus 8T is a matter of hours away, as the company is hosting a big virtual launch today to unveil its next flagship phone to the world. That’s less than a day after Apple introduced us to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.
We already know a lot about the OnePlus 8T as the company exclusively confirmed the screen specs to TechRadar last month, and we’ve seen a variety of teasers detailing certain features of the phone since then too.
That said, there’s still quite a bit to learn about the handset including when it’ll be released, how much it’s set to cost, and a few smaller specs that many will be excited to learn about.
The event starts at 7am PT / 10am ET / 3pm BST (that’s 1am AEDT on Thursday 15) so you should check back here around then to tune in to today’s big phone launch as it happens.
All times are in Pacific Standard Time (PST)
07:08 – This is an interview about the design rather than actually showing us the phone anymore. Please give us more shots of the device, OnePlus. We want to see it in all its glory.
It’s 188 grams, by the way. That just appeared on the screen in the background.
07:07 – And there it is! Introduced over a variety of dubstep tunes, the OnePlus 8T has just appeared on the screen. It’s the design we’ve seen teased from the company a few times now.
Now we’re diving into the design of the phone that you can see below:
07:06 – Oh wow, the OnePlus Watch sketches that were revealed a couple of years ago just appeared on stage. The company seems to be hinting that it’ll be making a wearable, but it says there isn’t anything new to share yet.
Here’s what we’ve heard about the OnePlus Watch previously.
07:04 – A new OnePlus Nord color is our first announcement, and it’s called Gray Ash. You guessed it, it’s a gray shade of the phone that the company launched a couple of months ago.
It’s being called a Special Edition, and it’ll cost £469 in the UK. You’re able to buy it from tomorrow. They also just said the OnePlus Nord products will be coming to the US in the near future.
07:03 – 5G is a big talking point at the start of this event. I wonder why that could be? Is it the fact Apple just embraced 5G technology for the first time with its new iPhone 12 series?
We’d put money on it.
07:01 – When will there be a OnePlus event where it doesn’t talk about how it launches with the OnePlus One in 2014? It feels like the opening to every single event.
07:00 – Now OnePlus is shouting numbers are us… oh, it’s the start of the event. They just said “products”, so we should expect more than just the OnePlus 8T. What else is there going to be?
06:58 – We’ve got a fresh cup of tea and a fistful of chocolate raisins to get us through this launch event. Hopefully it isn’t a super long one, as you can probably tell it has been a long few days in the technology world with the whole iPhone and Amazon Prime Day thing.
06:48 – Only 10 minutes left to go, and we’re hoping for some surprises here. Hopefully OnePlus has something it hasn’t teased so far… maybe, the OnePlus Watch?
05:21 – Only around an hour and a half left to go until the big event starts. We’re limbering up our typing fingers and working out how to screenshot the event. Luckily, OnePlus is hosting a normal YouTube event this time so it’s easier for us to hit the right button rather than its AR experience earlier this year.
If you’re not sure the OnePlus 8T is going to be for you and you live in the UK, there’s a deal running for the OnePlus 8 Pro at the moment that means you can get the handset for £50 cheaper.
That should be running even after today’s event, so maybe wait until the event is over to see if the new OnePlus handset is more suited to your tastes. You can find the deal here.
04:08 – It’s still strange seeing a company be as open about its announcements ahead of time as OnePlus is. For example, Founder and CEO of OnePlus, Pete Lau, has been tweeting bout a variety of features in the run up to today’s launch.
The flat out best display. Join us tomorrow for this and much more. #OnePlus8T pic.twitter.com/ITKvlLivMTOctober 13, 2020
03:10 – Unlike previous phone releases from OnePlus, this is set to just be the one handset. The company’s CEO confirmed last month that there won’t be a OnePlus 8T Pro alongside the OnePlus 8.
What’s the reason? The company says it plans to head in a direction that means “there is no room for an upgrade”. Exactly what that means is unclear, and we’re hoping to hear more on the topic at the OnePlus launch today.
01:41 – Another day, another phone launch. Less than 24 hours after the iPhone 12 launch, OnePlus will be hosting a live stream to reveal its next flagship phone.
It’s one you’ve heard a lot about already, but there’s still a good few core details that we haven’t gleaned and questions that haven’t been answered about the OnePlus 8T.
Hopefully we’ll be able to answer all of those questions at 7am PT / 10am ET / 3pm BST (that’s 1am AEDT on Thursday 15) when the show begins.
In the meantime, we’ll be updating this article throughout the day to update you on what we do know about the OnePlus 8T. That includes the fact there isn’t going to be a OnePlus 8T Pro in 2020… more on that, soon.
